Our classes for these grades are co-educational as we feel there is much to be gained in social and classroom relationships between boys and girls during this stage of their growth.
Students at Featherbed Lane School advance at their own rate of speed, unit by unit, in every phase of their education at a rate of learning that is comfortable for them. In addition, pre-primers through books on high school level are readily accessible to all grade levels. Each grade also may select from a wide variety of books and encyclopedias, both in individual class libraries and in the Clark Public Library. Students are taught to use the computerized card catalogue to facilitate their developing initiative to explore new areas independently. Thus their intellectual curiosity and resourcefulness are stimulated and constantly reinforced. Reading for competence and enjoyment become inter-changeable. Attention to the individual student's needs is emphasized. We have found that this policy makes for happier and better adjusted children. Thus we build a firm foundation in the fundamentals-reading, writing, mathematics, and spelling. Computers are also a part of our curriculum at Featherbed Lane School.
The primary emphasis of our mathematics program is in thinking, reasoning, and understanding rather than in purely mechanical responses to standard situations. However, drill on basic concepts is also an important part of the program.
We strive to broaden horizons by fostering interest in many facets of learning rather than just factual. Classes in Conversational French are offered to all students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Educational field trips in many areas are utilized in order to enhance cultural and academic background.
During warm weather children from grade one to grade six use our outdoor swimming facilities. Softball, kickball, and volleyball are also part of our gym programs. There is a formal physical education program which includes health education.
Featherbed Lane School has a carefully developed program of civic responsibility which enables students from grades four to six to participate in nursery, kindergarten and early grade programs. Opportunities of this caliber are rarely available to grade school students. We have found them to be a valuable asset for the older as well as the younger children.
Specifically, the children work in the lunch rooms, organize and carry out safety patrol, read stories to and play games with nursery and kindergarten children.
Acting as assistants to teachers also provides opportunities for the students to interact with adults in a more mature relationship. Parental understanding of the benefits to be derived from our program is greatly appreciated.
Program reports are issued four times a year. Standardized achievement tests are administered at the end of each school year as an additional check upon the progress of each child.
The academic year culminates with musical and dramatic programs which the parents are invited. These productions, which are very enjoyable for those attending, enhance each student's feeling of self-confidence and increase their abilities in the area of public speaking.
The sixth graduation takes place at one of these end-of-the-year programs. With much pride, knowing the students are well prepared to go on to future academic achievements, the diplomas are presented along with the congratulations of the entire school staff.
